Road Safety Reminders

April 19, 2016 By WebGuy

Although you may have learnt a lot from your driver’s ED instructor, you can never learn too much about driving safety. Here are a couple of important pointers to remember whenever you are driving your vehicle.

Rest Well

If you are planning to go on a long drive, make sure to get plenty of sleep the night before the journey. Many people often think drinking caffeine will help. At the beginning, you may feel alert, but soon the effects will wear off and you will be back to feeling tired and too drowsy to drive safely.

Check the car

Before driving, always check the car for any faults. Even if the car is new and it is the next day when you are leaving the house or you just parked it for a few hours. Something might have happened to the car while you were not around or that you did not notice from the previous. Just take a walk around your car to make sure everything is right especially with the tires.

Wet weather and night time driving

Make sure to keep extra distance between you and the car ahead of you if it is raining. In normal weather, maintain a distance of at least 3 seconds between you and the car ahead, double it in bad weather. While driving at night slow down and dim your lights when approaching an on-coming car. It is a common driving courtesy that many people fail to recognize. It allows the other driver to properly see what is ahead without your lights blinding them. Once you are past them and the road it clear, you can turn your lights back up.

Overtaking lane

The left lane is only used for overtaking. Even if you are travelling faster than everyone else is, it does not mean you should stay on the overtaking lane. Simply overtake a car and go back to the right lane because other cars behind you may want to overtake too and you may hinder them from doing so.

Staying awake

Keep the radio on or put on some music and make sure to roll down your window. It is also better not to use cruise control since having to actually maintain your car’s speed will help you stay awake. You can also take a nap before driving just to power up. You can avoid making some costly mistakes while on the road.
